"Having beaten Michigan without even being at the top of its game, Ohio State wouldn't shy away from a rematch for the national championship. But outspoken right tackle Kirk Barton would much prefer another chance to humble Notre Dame.
"I'm not a big fan of their coach," he said after the Buckeyes' 42-39 win over Michigan on Saturday, "and I'm not a big fan of their program."
Asked what he had against Charlie Weis and the Irish, Barton said in a voice dripping with sarcasm: "They're a great program. They're Notre Dame — oooh..."

While I agree with him (that Ohio State shouldn't have to bow to anyone) I wouldn't be saying that in the press. We have a few Perry posters here. What, did Notre Dame pass on him or something?

quite a different read on in the ESPN.
article...http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/columns/story?columnist=forde_pat&id=2667714
So who else could play the underdog role in Glendale?
"The game I'm looking at is probably Notre Dame-USC," Barton said. "I'm thinking the winner of that is going to be our opponent."
Barton said this before Cal-USC kicked off. But given the Trojans' run the past few years, there are a few Buckeyes who would like a shot a them.
I always wanted to play them," Richardson said. "I've heard too much about them."
Barton said he'd prefer USC over the Fighting Irish.
"I'll be rooting against Notre Dame," Barton said. "I'm not a big fan of their coach and the program."

I'm not sure about that one. If I were to quess, I'd say they never gave him a look and he didn't care. If he's anything like me, then Michigan is team 1-A and ND is 1-B on the teams that I don't like list.
I'm sure as a Tiger fan you can hear some SW Ohio poster saying on yappi in a voice dripping with sarcasm: "They're a great program. They're Massillon — oooh..."

I would highly doubt that Barton would say anything like that. If you've ever heard ANYBODY on the football team talk to the media, you better LOVE Ohio State because they give you the most bland answers they can come up with.

Kirk wasn't on very many D-1 programs radar screens his senior year. As a matter of fact, it was another local High school coach that encouraged OSU's people to take a long look at him. Not his own head coach!

They are well taught by the Jim Tressel in being humble and avoiding bulletin board material.

Excellent point Al!
All you need to do is look at how Tressel conducts himself on the sideline, in the media, on a recruiting visit, and in the locker room and you'll see why his players conduct themselves the way they do.
Tressel has minimal emotional peaks and valleys. He's a very level headed person that conducts himself that way at all times.
If you want to see the Polar opposite of that just look at Lloyd Carr! His emotions go from the the depths of the valley to the heights of the peaks instantly, and constantly. The way he conducts himself on the sidelines has to affect his players. When they see their head coach crying, whining, and chasing the officials up and down the sidelines slobbering all over himself EVERY single game, they have to think that the officials are against them. And some of them actually follow in his footsteps. Like Manningham did against OSU. We were having a riot just watching Super Mario pushing, crying and whining on and off the field in the 2nd half!

Does it matter?
I think it does. Mostly because its hard to believe.....
Just curious about who it was? Is it documented anywhere? Why would you leave the name out? Is it a state secret? How would you know this?

What makes it so hard to believe? It's not that uncommon that a HS coach promotes a player from another team, and it certainly isn't uncommon that the players head coach isn't doing it as much as he should be!
Why would I know? Lets just say that I probably know a lot more about athletics in N.E. Ohio then you and most others on here, even living 1070 miles away!
BTW! Why do you think "you" should know?

Here is the deal with the comment and why Barton amde the comment about not liking their coach. A lot of OSU players started to dislike Weis last year at the Fiesta Bowl. There was an FCA(Fellowship of Christian Athletes) breakfast that both teams attended and Weis was very arrogant towards the OSU players. Weis then went on to give a speech about his life and his daughter who is handicapped. During the speech, Weis referred to his daughter as a "demon child" and said that she was a burden on his life for many years. Many OSU players could not believe he was saying that about his own daughter. Several OSU players that I know personally told me that story and said that was extra incentive to beat ND last year, because he made those comments.

Its not hard to believe, you make it hard to believe by leaving out facts in your statement.
Forget about it Mr./Ms./Mrs. Know it all. I was just curious to know who helped the kid get to OSU. Keep your national secrets to yourself.

Chronic!
The name of the coach that encouraged the OSU staff to look at Kirk doesn't matter! It's not relevant, and it's certainly not a secret! It just happens to be something that I'm not going to reveal to you or anyone else on here in open forumn!
My response to the thread was to add some information regarding the question as to whether or not Kirk was upset about Notre Dame possibly "passing" on him!
I made a factual statement on a thread about Kirk Barton and I had no obligation to you, or anyone else to disclose who the coach was that promoted the young man!
As for your smart @ss Mr., Ms., Mrs., comment goes, I'm Mr., and although I'm certainly not a know it all, I assure you that I know more about athletes, athletics, H.S. programs in N.E. then you do!
As a matter of fact, I'm just wondering if you were the one just last week that was commenting on "how it's amazing that people 1,000 miles away seem to think they know more about Massillon's players then people living in Massillon do"! I don't "seem" to think that I may know more about Massillons players then you, I'm certain I do!
Get over it already!

No that was not me. If you can show it was I would be surprised. I'm over it but I think you may need to get over yourself. You make claims about your superior knowledge when you dont know who your talking to, not smart.
Happy Holidays....
:scratchchin:
I'm still curious about what makes your statement factual, is it only that you said it?

Happy Holidays to you too!
I didn't say it was you. I said "I wondered" if it was you!
In this case it doesn't really matter who I'm talking to. If it did, you wouldn't be asking me who the coach was that I alluded to!
Last but not least, what makes it factual is the fact that it happened! I certainly don't need to fabricate such things, and it could be easily corroberated if it became necessary!
Thanks for the interest!

Well if this is true, and I have no reason to believe it's not, then I can see why he might be of that opinion. Did anyone see the "60 Minutes" piece on Weis?

it certainly doesn't stem from the lack of recruiting...or he'd hate most every college program. as good as barton was in hs.... he wasn't a major target. furthermore... weiss wasn't even at ND during his recruitment.
my guess is it stems -- like most other anti-ND fans -- from the overhype of ND and that fat-man weiss gets.... mix in the fact that THE OSU football team destroyed ND last year... and presto... instant resentment.
btwo... twib is right. to a degree. someone got the ball started on barton.

..........it seems charlie and his wife have started a charity for parents with children like his daughter hanna...........one way of explaining her illness would be to use the word demon, just i have my own demons to fight.....like most humans.....it would be heartbreaking to have a chid with mental illness....

My understanding is that Weiss cut Barton off at the buffet line last year at some Fiesta Bowl dinner and ate the last fifteen pork chops.

I believe that!
Tuna Jr. is twice the size of his idol Bill "Tuna" Parcells these days!
BTW! Weis, Ralph Friedgen (Maryland), Mark Mangino (Kansas) and Tom Amstutz (Toledo) have got to be pushing 400 Lbs. or better! When ever I watch them during a game I can't help but think they're gonna drop over with a heart attack!

Cracker-Are you absolutely sure Weiss said that? They did a piece on ESPN last night about him and his relationship with his daughter. He said that when she would have an outburst, some people would look at her like she was an animal. He and his wife co-founded the Hannah & Friends Foundation.
http://www.hannahandfriends.org/
Hearing him speak about it last night, it just seems improbable that he would speak negatively about his daughter. Is it possible someone misheard or took a comment out of context?

yes I am positive, 4 Buckeyes told me the story, and I am close with them, so they would not make it up. Maybe he was referencing his initial reaction to finding out , I dont know...but he did say it
