The Independent got rid of most of the regular carriers and hired others who could deliver the paper at 6:30AM. Today, I got no paper, and yesterday it was at the bottom of the driveway.

My carrier was wonderful at his job--dependable, reliable, and consistent. I would rather get it at 4PM when school is out and know it is there. Plus, I just lost one of the best paperboys that I have ever had.

Is anyone else having problems?

I've had excellent carriers over the years and the last few years it was delivered by automobile in the early morning rather than by foot in the afternoon. However, they always took the time to put the paper on my front porch and in bad weather in a plastic bag. Earlier this week the Inde sent a notice that they would be converting to driveway delivery in my neighborhood. A change that many national newspapers have already made. They also said if my mailbox is at the end of the driveway that they can install for $2.50 a tube and post when they can place the paper.

Yes, I have had the same paper carriers for along time, they informed their route they will no longer deliver the paper because of the new contracts with the carriers and the paper. They wanted them to pick up their papers by 2:00am and deliver by 6:30am.

Do to their various jobs and school they were no longer able to provide the services. Also I was informed that some carriers were given more routes do to this change and also had to give it up because they were unable to provide the services and times that the paper wanted them to do with the extra routes given to them.

It also was part of the deal that to provide the papers to subscribers they had to put them in the weatherproof bags if necessary and place them at the end of the driveway so they can do their route faster. Which, I don't mind going down to the end of my driveway to get the paper, but I am concerned for the elderly going down to the end of their driveway on bad weather conditions and possibly falling a breaking a hip, so I contacted the Independent by e-opinion, the next day I received a phone call telling me the reasons for their change and that if any elderly persons that call into the department to cancel or complain they will accommodate them and still deliver their paper at their door.

Before I could get out and get the paper, my daughter has ran over it several of times and I can just imagine when it starts snowing and it gets buried under the snow what it will look like when I finally get it.

I was also told I could put a paper box at the end of my driveway, lol, but our street does not have our mailboxes down on the street line and if we did I wouldn't see a problem getting one, but at this time I don't want one of those boxes decorating my yard.

Wednesday I got a nice letter from my paperboy; Thursday I got a note from the Inde. telling me the same things that both of you mentioned. Truly my paperboy was wonderful, he would put it on my porch. I am sure that he got a lot of tips from his many paper customers as he did such a fine job. We all saved our rubber bands and plastic for him as the carrier was in charge of buying their own. This was a fine opportunity for him to earn and save money for college. Last year, I even sent a letter of commendation to The Inde. Circulation Dept. as he was doing such a fine job. Although I often read The Inde. Online, I still like a hard copy of the paper. Today, I have no paper.

So much for a kid's first job as a paper carrier. That is now another thing of the past. All of my 4 kids had paper routes when they were younger. It taught them the concept of working for and earning their own money, as opposed to just receiving an allowance. Not to mention, responsibility and a lesson in communicating with their customers. Back then, they still had to collect for the most part.

Not that they liked the work so much, especially delivering on that hill on Ohio N.E. where almost every home has stairs to climb. But they sure did like that money and the fact that it was their decision on what to do with it.

When I was a carrier, I got so much crap from people wanting their paper earlier. I would tell them I was only 13 and had to go to school, but they didnt care.

It was mostly the older people.

Being a carrier for the Inde was NOT a good experience for me. People I had to deliver to were mean as all hell. Some of them were pretty disgusting too. Even when I would hand out a notice of when I would be around to collect, they were never ready. I had to go inside the house while they found the check book or wallet. Then wait for them to write out the check. The inside of some of these homes were gross. I still remember the smell of most of them. :puke:

Tiger2001,

Although I am very sypathetic for your plight, that was not the point that I was trying to make. Believe me, I realize the difficulty that you must have encountered. Change can be good, but when the change is radical, it is hard to adjust to under circumstances. Although I am mobile and can scour my yard attempting to find the paper, many of the elderly can not. It is going to be much worse come winter for them.

Also, I agree with Kam in that it teaches responsibility and communication skills. My paper delivery people have been wonderful--all of them. When you have a good thing going, then don't change it.

Believe me, I can forgive a few mistakes--no paper, but I am disappointed that my wonderful delivery person no longer has a job.

Plus you would possibily have the code enforcement officer on your case also. Lots of red tape in the City of Massillon. Stuff like it has to be this far from the curb or has to be this far from the drive way or you cant have it out by the road at all. Just examples.

From what I remember when I was a kid, being a newspaper carrier was not a very good paying by any means so I don't see how this could really save them that much money (if that is their concern) but then again I'm basing this off of assumption without looking at the actually figures so I have no clue. I know that times are changing but I always thought the paper routes were a nice and that gave the inde more of a personable touch and gave kids the opportunity to learn responsibility and work ethic.

Delivering newspapers is an honorable first job. I did that, mowed lawns, painted houses and schlepped golf bags at Brookside. I also have two college degrees.

My mother, who is 82 years old used to get her paper delivered to her front porch. Now they just throw it in her driveway.
Come winter time, she's cancelling her subscription.

A paper route was my first job, as well as my son's .

It was a great way to teach him the value of hard work, and how to strech a dollar. It also got us to go out to breakfast every Sunday, after we delivered the morning paper.

The paper guy my neighbor used to have had that route in his family for over 20 years. He's who I feel bad for. He didnt do anything to loose his job, someone took it from him.

I just called the Indy about my mom's paper. She's 89 and I told them that I don't want her walking down the driveway, especially when it's slippery to get her paper on the ground or in a tube.

The rep told me that if the carrier can pull into the driveway and throw it on a porch, then a notation can be made and they will do that. So, now they are supposed to throw it on her side stoop. I hope they follow through.

I have to say, the rep I spoke with was very nice.

Well, here is another one, disappointed today was the first day for the new delivery person, we got the Repository, we do not subscribe for this paper, only suppose to get it on Sundays.

I called around 4:30 to the Inde, they stated they were sorry a person would get our Inde to us ASAP, because they were in the area, guess what it is now 6:44pm and still no paper.

Husband just got home from the store to pick up a few things and a paper, did not have one, went to several local places and they had no Inde, some only received the Rep. I think with the new way of doing things really stinks and they have a lot of bugs to iron out, but I am paying in advance for these papers and I really don't think I should be paying for a paper I don't get, or for a paper I do not subsribe to.

Ever since GateHouse purchased The Inde. and The Rep., I have had the feeling that they intended to combine the two into one paper. This may be coming next.

Can you imagine the problems that are going to arise when customers ask that their papers be held while they are on vacation or going on an extended business trip? That will be a major problem if they can't get it right now.

My kiddos were given their "walking" papers in mid September and finished this past week...a real dissappointment for them. The customers were very generous to them on their last week though and the kids were grateful.... I think it is a shame to take away a great opportunity for children to "learn to earn".
Hopefully they will work out all the kinks and people will begin to get their papers timely and in a convenient location.

My brothers and I had the same route for about 12 years. They started it and handed it down to me. Juat like my first pair of PF Flyers. I can tell you that i loved delivering papers. I was very proud of the fact that I actually knew ALL of our customers. I loved the Christmas season especially. The tips were great and even better that that, I spent MANY hours at several homes eating cookies. I had to save the right ones for last so I could finish my route. I know times have changed, but our kids are going to miss out on yet another one of the good things from the past. BTW, I am going to end my subscription after 13 years because of these changes.

Bassmaster & all of the people who have shared their experiences on this thread,

When I started it, it took a lot of courage as I am rather shy. In NO way am I blaming the local people from The Inde.--I am thinking that the plan was developed by GateHouse. It would be wonderful if someone from The Inde. could let us know a bit more. Things are awry and there has to be an explanation.

Honestly, I did not mean to stir up a "hornet's nest," but I am concerned for the paper delivery people who lost their jobs and the elderly who are going to have to skate on the ice to get their papers in the winter.

First of all, thanks to all of you who are faithful subscribers to The Independent. Times are certainly tough, but we're working hard to keep providing the news and views that are important to Massillon and the surrounding community.

We're grateful to those of you who have been patient as we work out the kinks of a new delivery system -- aimed at keeping the costs of getting your newspaper to you low, so that we can avoid making cuts that affect the quality and content of your daily Inde.

All of your concerns are, of course, valid and we NEED to hear them so that we can address them. The most important thing, we understand, is keeping all of you as Inde readers, and that means making you happy with the newspaper and how it is delivered to you.

As for elderly and disabled subscribers to The Independent -- exceptions are being made for them in regards to this new "driveway delivery" policy. Please call our circulation department to make arrangements if you are elderly or disabled or if there are other reasons you cannot physically retrieve your newspaper from your driveway or from a newspaper box at the front of your home.

If a wet newspaper continues to be a problem for you, or if you believe it will be an issue with the winter weather, please consider having a newspaper box installed. It will ensure that your newspaper is protected from the elements and ready for reading bright and early each morning.

The circulation department phone number is 330-580-8500. Independent circulation manager Sheila Casler can also be reached at 330-580-8356. Please be patient as we are experiencing a very heavy call volume as we work out the kinks of this new system.

Thank you for your input, and thank you for reading The Independent!

Thanks, Mr. McCune, for coming on here and addressing some of the problems that we have or should anticipate. Really, I thought it was a GateHouse problem and not directly related to The Inde. The note that you wrote in no way alluded that the problem was due to GateHouse, therefore, are we to surmise that the decision was made by The Inde.?

Also, you noted that if you have a continuous problem with a wet paper, please report it to the Circulation Dept. Please operationally define "continuous."

As per my request, you came on and somewhat addressed the issue. I appreciate it.

Believe me, I am grateful for a hometown newspaper, as long as the majority of the status quo still exists. Please continue to keep us apprised of what is going on with the paper.

I have been complaining about this for at least 4 years to the Inde. How hard is it to get it in the mailbox hangers and off the porch so it doesn't get wet? I guess it is a big hassle cause it has never been done. When I had a route (20+ years ago) I used to put it wherever it was supposed to go.

And this new driveway delivery has me questioning my situation. We have a shared drive. I hope that my neighbors, who don't get the paper, don't decide to take it thinking it is a freebie for them.

And for the issue of when the paper is supposed to be delivered by, I have accepted the fact that it will be late. I gave up complaining about that. It was good in the last 5-6 months, but prior to that, I sometimes wouldn't get the Sat/Sun paper until 1 PM and the daily until 6 or later. If they do it right, I welcome the morning delivery. It will be different and nice to look at the headlines while having a cup of coffee.

Maybe the Inde and Rep should have an option for "internet only" and charge a reduced fee and make all content available online. Then people that want to cancel can still access it online and the papers still make money. Is this an option today?

I'm much more likely to read the inde online then get the paper. If I had all the content available I'd be willing to pay a reasonable fee. Unfortunately newspapers will probably charge more for the online version than they did for the paper version.

At one time the Inde offerred a full version of the paper online in pdf format.

The dumb thing was, they made you subscribe to home delivery in addition to the fee for reading it online.

Had they offerred an online subscription only, I would have bought it immediately.

Mr McCune:

My brother is a Repository carrier and now has around 375 papers Friday through Monday and slightly fewer Tuesday through Thursday. His round trip is 28 miles.

He has over 30 percent who have requested porch delivery or a special location with half of those not being senior citizens or physically challenged.

Customers on one of his former routes had special requests which were erased when the new routes were created and now cannot get customer service to reestablish these requests. (He gave his customers his phone number and they called him quite frequently the first week even though he sent his own note detailing the changes.)

The remaining are tube delivery, many which still get extremely wet inside when it rains more than a sprinkle so bagging is still necessary. Some are even wet during high humidity days in the summer.

He requisitions supplies and doesn't receive them for several days so he has to scramble for any type of bag to protect the paper.

And if he isn't first in line at his bulk drop location, he may not leave the parking lot until after 4 in the morning (this is a particular problem on Saturday and Sunday). Yet the Beacon Journal driver (a family friend) in his area many times has his entire route COMPLETED!!!! before my brother even delivers his first paper.

He was in one of the first two areas converted so this has been going on in the same manner for a few weeks.

There are more than a "few" kinks to work out. This was not thought through very well, especially the bulk drop times. They should be close to 2AM not around 4AM.

As an Inde carrier from a loooong time ago, this move by the present company is no surprise. We all know the quality, as well as the quantity has gone downhill and is no doubt going to end in a merger with the Rep.

The "paper boy" job was my first, beginning at the old building where we would get our papers passed out by Mr Hostetler (Hossie) and then we'd spread out all over town. The Lincoln Way bridge was gone and a wooden walkway led me up to the West Side where my route ran from Walnut down into the Heights. Although some of my customers "stiffed" me, most were good, generous people and the education from this first job started me on a fairly successful business career. I'm sure many others have found the same to be true.

The loss of "first" jobs is a shame ..... The loss of the Independent won't be mourned by many, as it's already mostly gone.

Well, so much for your paper being delivered by 6:30am...for the past week or so, we got our paper between 8:00 and 8:30am and today...we are still waiting!!!

I don't care if we got our paper at 4:00pm, but we lost a good family that delivered our paper for this stupid system and I am sure this is happening to the majority of subscribers.

I say....bring back all the people that lost their routes do to this change!!

Mine comes at all times of the day now. Sometimes it's on the porch, sometimes the driveway, sometimes the front yard. Anytime I call in an "on the line" they refuse to print it. Don't know what I did to p$#s them off. Time to cancel my subscription, too.

calcm - I remember walking across that wooden walkway with my father to visit my grandparents on the West Side. I've asked others in my family about it, but no one else remembers it. What year do you think it was?

My brother had a Plain Dealer route. I still remember his papers hitting our porch about 3:30/4:00 am. Now the PD doesn't even cover Stark County and hasn't for quite some time.

Three times in the last two weeks they delivered the Repository instead of Inde to my house. Saturday morning they didn't deliver anything. I called the circulation dept around 10 am to report it and they said they would be right-out. Called again at 3pm and a recorded message said all of their offices were closed. Please call back during normal business hours. :wall: So for a newspaper that is printed during the night and is to be delivered by 6 am, what are normal business hours?

The paper delivery person on my route must have quit. Yesterday, I got my Sunday Rep. after 3PM. Today, I have not received my Inde. and it is close to 2:00PM.

During the first week of the tranisition, I missed three papers. After my 2nd call to them, I inquired about my current balance as I usually pay in advance. After that, it was great--it was here when it should have been and in a bag. Is there anyone else who received their paper late on Sunday and no paper on Monday? As of now, I just access it online, as my hard copy is late or missing.

i discontinued my subscription years ago because i got tired of calling to find out where my paper was. it was constantly hit and miss with delivery. now, i get one when i want one at the store. much less aggravation.
