View Full Version : Sad But True

This was sent to me by one of the teachers at our school. Sad, but true although it doesn't apply to her since we are in private, Catholic schools.

After being interviewed by the school administration, the eager teaching prospect said: "Let me see if I've got this right. You want me to go into that room with all those kids, and fill their every waking moment with a love for learning, and I'm supposed to instill a sense of pride in their ethnicity, modify their disruptive behavior, observe them for signs of abuse and even censor their T-shirt messages and dress habits. You want me to wage a war on drugs and sexually transmitted diseases, check their backpacks for weapons of mass destruction, and raise their self esteem. You want me to teach them patriotism, good citizenship, sportsmanship, fair play, how to register to vote, how to balance a checkbook, and how to apply for a job. I am to check their heads for lice, maintain a safe environment, recognize signs of anti-social behavior, and make sure all students pass the state exams, even those who don't come to school regularly or complete any of their assignments. Plus, I am to make sure that all of the students with handicaps get an equal education regardless of the extent of their mental or physical handicap. I am to communicate regularly with the parents by letter, telephone, newsletter and report card. All of this I am to do with just a piece of chalk, a computer, a few books, a bulletin board, a big smile AND on a starting salary that qualifies my family for food stamps! You want me to do all of this and then you tell me that I CAN'T PRAY?"

She can pray. She just can't lead the class in school prayer.

I see all these bumper stickers that insist that God has been taken out of our schools, and I feel sorry for the folks in those cars.

They must have the wrong God, because mine cant be taken out of anywhere.

I'm sorry. I'm doing a lot of multi-tasking today. This proved me wrong how? It was an opinion by a teaching prospect passed on to a teacher we know. Anyway, whatever. I thought it was interesting.

And Pizaninlaw, quick question son. Bullying and belittling? Have you ever been on yappi or other similar web-sites? Jesus LORD, this is NOTHING. If this is bullying and belittling to you perhaps you need a thicker skin.

Exactly right. God is not confined within a building. People can pray all day long, anywhere, any place, any time.

I have taken my share on here.
First, If you actually paid attention, you would notice that the post I mentioned was from bs gunn, not me.

Second, I was actually pointing to the fact that as soon as anyone posts something that opposes your opinion, or that points out the hyprocracy of your post, you immediately make a Waaa post that is usually something condescending or insulting to their intelligence. So who needs a thicker skin?

One has nothing to do with the other, A student can pray as well as a teacher. In a public school who would decide the prayer? The teacher (who maybe Jewish ) or the student that maybe Catholic ? I do not need any teacher or other school leader leading my child in prayer, I can handle that myself at home thank you.
I will agree that are teachers are given to many other duties rather than just teaching the class. These problems come from Parents that do not take the responsibly to raise their children on their own. Also the "No child left behind" did not help. That was a Bush blunder. Now to be fair the teachers unions ( strongly supported by the Dem's) hurt the education of our kids as well. A lot of us graduated from the old Washington High, and when I went there it was no beacon of light on the hill, and frankly some of my teachers looking back were not the greatest either. Thank heavens I had a Mom and Dad that took an interest in my up bringing, that was my saving grace.

good question, believe it our not she was pretty nice to me in those study halls, would let me and a few of my friends move to an empty part of the class to study ( right). We would talk and joke the whole time. I seen:weightlift: her fire up some kids though over the time I was there.

Lucky one you are. Ms. Arrington used to whip my behind upside my head. I saw her at the Buchtel game a few years ago. She still scared me. I walked behind her in case she remembered me and tried to beat me some more.

Ahhh, Mrs. Arrington. We were adversaries, lol. I bet she gave me 20 detentions. Man I tormented her. But we kinda liked each other at the same time.

I see her from time to time at games and our eyes meet and she gives me a grin but we never talk to each other. Like she knows that I know now how bad I was and what she put up with, lol. She was pretty cool looking back on it.

The old days of Washington High. When I was a senior, we studied the Bible as literatuure. Are they still allowed to do this???? Maybe someone knows.

We used to have prayer over the PA, I don't think it hurt us -- usually helped us.

But, as long as there are tests in school, there will be prayer in school....

Ms. Arrington is still around and still works for the MCS system. She has been taking tickets at the gate on the home side for years now. I happened to talk with her this past Friday and she has been with the schools now for 39 years and doesn't plan on leaving quit yet.

Fantastic women to talk with, we talked about the times when she was the student section monitor and she loved doing it, and noted that the Jr. High section was the worsed. She also told me a few stories about chaperoning on one of the Soph. busses for an away game, she said it was a nightmare...but when she did the JR. or SR. busses she never had a problem.

This is because by the time you were a junior you were so scared of her that you knew better than to screw up in her presents. Great women I say Hello and talk with her almost every game I go to. The wierd thing is how many of us she remembers, 39 years, thats alot of kids she has impacted. WITH FEAR "LOL".

That guy was something, guys used to sit there with their books open taking a test and he would walk right by.. I don't want to get into bashing any teachers but I will praise two that I had at old WHS. Mrs. Amstutz for English,, one of the nicest older Ladies I ever met. We would be joking around and she would get this little shy grin . For a older lady she was very cool. Second, Mr. Austin for history, our class was like a scene from black board jungle with all these crazy guys in it. He handled it as best as he could and was just a good guy. Saw him at a Massillon Mckinley game years ago and told him what I thought , I think he enjoyed me telling him but we had just won and I may have did a little to much tailgating before the game to remember clearly.:weightlift:

Hate is a strong word. Remember, God is Love.

I had a lot of great teachers back them. The great Mr. Spees for math, Ms. Maney for English, hottie Claudette I. but I can't remember what she taught!! Ha ha.

I can't remember his name, maybe Scarini or something for political science. That guy was stellar. Tom Engler for chemistry. All good in my opinion.
