I was on the U. of Michigan website and learned that former Massillon standout Shawn Crable is taking over the outside linebacker starting duties this year and Preasott Burgess is moving to inside (will) position to put better athletes on the field. Shawn has worked hard at U.of M and desearves this chance to shine! One more tiger in the spotlight in the big ten!!!

Well, I'm glad to see Buckeye fans have come around to wishing this kid well, because it seems like only a short time ago when he announced he was going to UM that people were ALL OVER him. First and foremost (in my mind), once a Tiger, ALWAYS a Tiger, and we should support them no matter what.

We will be rooting for Shawn's personal success on the field. He was definately my son's hero:weightlift: I don't really think that people didn't support Shawn so much as they were just disappointed that he chose that "other" school instead of OSU.

Kamd50-- why disappointment about Shawn not going to OSU! Every Massillon player besides spielman and my brother didnt even get a fair chance to play or see the field. OSU was the worst move my brother made in his life! Shawn would have sat the bench at OSU but has 2 letters at Michigan. I aint hating on the bucks but our hometown boys dont seem to get a fair chance in Columbus!!!

It just makes it difficult to split loyalties when a hometown favorite is playing for one of our (Bucks) bigtime rivalries. I will always root for any former Tiger's individual accomplishments, but at the same time, never be able to root for their team unless OSU is completely out of the picture, as in a bowl game. I do share your sentiment concerning former Tigers spending too much time on the bench down there. Is it merely coincidence? Shawn did was is right for Shawn, just as every young man needs to do in this game. The competition is definately fierce. We will anxiously be waiting to see him in action this season, as I said, he is one of my son's heroes. Everytime he is around town, the young kids seem to know about it and try to migrate to where he might be. And Shawn is always gracious enough to spend time talking with them and so forth. They get a big kick out of that:thumbsup:

Monte,
I'm sure that everyone who goes to Ohio State gets a fair chance (unless the player behind you is from Glenville) to play. From what I remember, your brother was only there for 1 season wasn't he? Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems like he left because he wasn't playing as a freshman?? It's been a while, but update us on his situation at OSU. Who ended up being the tailback when he was there?

Travis played two seasons at OSU as a redshirt Soph he had two hundred yard games against Rice and Pitt. His Fr. year Robert Smith was the starter and soph. Raymont Harris and Buster benonte were rotating. Travis and Eddie George were reserves. The jr. season he stopped playing after 3rd reconstruction on knee.

Shawn has matured into a fine young man and i am delighted to see him finally get the chance to showcase his talents. he was in Columbus speaking at a football camp for youth in June. i wanted to take my son but I was at U. of Miami(OH) with Darion!

Monte,
I still say Travis was the best high school running back I've ever witnessed playing (Charles Woodson was 2nd, Tyrell Sutton 3rd, the kid from Dayton Chaminade a few years ago 4th). He had such great lateral movement as he was running, it was hard to put a direct hit on him. That's too bad he got injured, I would love to had seen him in the backfield with Eddie George.

Massillon History (Past 25 years)I rank Travis#1, Jerome Myricks #2, Craig Johnson#3 there is few more i could mention. (I wish jerome would have had more touches) Desmond Howard is the best back i have ever played against! Travis is doing real well now. he plays entirely to much golf!! We should start a thread for all time tiger offense and defense! Will you or I make the cut?(laughs) I would have steep competition at olb with-- crable, hoggy, wollard,bradley,etc... just to name a few i liked before and after me! Stats were only kept on defense since 1999!

Travis is the best back I have seen since I started attending games in 1974. He could singlehandedly takeover a game. One of my favorites was the Toledo St. John's playoff game in 91. They were beating us pretty good in the first half and Travis just took over the game in the second half and we came back and whipped them. They had no answer for him. Also, no one can ever forget his 302 yards against the dogs.

He was also part of a tandem that included Falondo Ashcraft. I don't think we've had a better 1-2 punch in the backfield like that in my lifetime.

If names like Eddie George and Robert Smith were playing, you can see why it was hard to break the lineup. Man Travis was a stud though. I love to break out the old game tapes. That 91 backfield was sweet!
Travis had the best spin move that I have ever witnessed! Not only was he a great player he is a great person. He is the reason that I ended up being a free safety. When I was a soph. I worked my way up to second string tailback and Coach Owens told me if I would move to free safety I would start. So, thanks to Travis being a great tailback I made a move that would get me that coveted free college education.
Monte, you ought to ask Travis about the time we spent the night at your grandma's house and pulled an all nighter doing a report for Mr. Murphy. The next morning we recieved a blessing from god with a snow day.

Talked to travis today about division alignments & Darion being voted captain! Hack you were a great safety massillon got all of us to college! Travis always waited to do assignments thinking he could ace any exam, paper,etc,... I hope he can come up for the hamilton game but you will be coaching that week! let me know when you are going to be in Massillon. Tell your father i said hello!

Whatever-- we in Columbus see the Glenville favortism shown to new and future OSU players going out of Glenville! 2 players had to transfer because of academics before evening attending practice last year! They know play for the bearcats! Recruit players that we meet the standards! Tressel loves Ted Ginn Sr. and will sign any player with his endorsement even if he cant graduate!! OSU is like U. of Miami and Oklahoma of the 80's! Win at all costs even if former players will be on the soup line after their senior season! It is NFL or bust at OSU!

hey monte...it's not good to go through life bitter. you're brother had tough circumstances, and some people don't work at at certain programs...deal with it.
as far as tress and TGSr.... what DI college coach WOULDN'T love to have a program like Glenville in their backyard. sure tOSU offered borderline kids... big deal! what program hasn't?
with ever-increasing acedemic standards (now #2 in the big ten) and a team average GPA of around 3.0... i hardly see OSU as a Miami or Oklahoma.

This is a point I can agree with 110%. I don't remember who, but people WERE up in arms when Shawn chose U of M over OSU and others. He did what was BEST for him, bottom line.
Remember, this was the same year Justin and Devin chose OSU. Now, Devin's injury problems notwithstanding, who has given himself the best (football) opportunity out of that group? Shawn, by far. Justin, in my opinion, should have transfered about 2 years ago. He should have seen the writing on the wall in C-bus.
Granted, Justin probably has other opportunities to make something of himself, but (in hindsight), he made a poor football decision.

I agree, it doesn't matter where the hell your from. Bigtime college coaches have their jobs on the line. If they don't win, their gone! If Coach Tressel puts 11 guys on the field from Glenville and loses, he's gone too. The problem (and the prejudices) come into play during recruiting season. Too many times, a coach will offer a scholarship to a player from a "big name" high school program over a smaller program. That may not be the best decision. But, once the player is at the school, the best players play.

Everyone seems to bash the guys from glenville and make it seem like the only reason they are recruited is because they are from glenville. It just so happens that they are great players. Troy Smith andTed Ginn are heisman quality players. Robert Rose, Ray Small, and Bryant Browing will be big contributors in the future as well. None of these guys were offered just because they are from glenville. They are damn good players! Get off of OSU's back btw. Go Bucks!!!!

Yeah, and I don't think Jerry Rice went to any well-known school either. In fact I KNOW he didn't. He went to Mississippi Valley State. Yeah, a REAL icon in the football world. And I think Woody Hayes found Champ Henson back in the '70s at some obscure farm school down there. In fact he had committed to Michigan and Woody turned him around.

You are missing the point-- we are just pointing out that high school athletes in Ohio should keep their college options open and that premweir athletes are getting the OSU schlarships-- why go to OSU and sit behind a player for 3-4 years because you love the bucks-- go play ball!!! You play football because you loved football! I had my heart set on U. of Michigan but ended up at U. of Cincinnati! I still was playing football. No matter the talent level, you still have to be able execute on the field.
He is a GREAT punt returner, but is horrible as a WR. If you ever notice, with all his speed, he can't get separation from the line.
His speed doesn't make hima good WR. Average at best.

I came to read about Shawn Crable - awesome representation for Massillon - how many times will Massillon get mentioned on TV this year becasue he is having (and he will) a great year! Yeah, he's at UM, oh well...I remember a guy by the name of Denny Franklin too - he was fun to watch at UM, even against Ohio State.

Re: the Bucks and Ginn - I only see one team that will challenge their "O" and that is Texas...the rest of the defenses they face, like that slower-than-mollasses-in-January defense from Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl, will make a really good offense look even better.

Thank you for pointing out that this post was for former Massillon Tiger star Shawn Crable becoming the starting OLB for the University of Michigan!!!!(already has 2 letters) The new "D" Coordinator Preascott Burgess is moving to ILB(weak) and Shawn is starting Olb-- I cant wait to see what happens! On the OSU/Glenville connection--Tressel is in love with Ted Ginn Sr. and every player recommended by him will be at OSU!!! 2 players that were on the OSU roster as freshman last year transfered to UC due to academics--- tressel knew them kids could not qualify and wasted 2 free rides in 05!!!
