I wonder how many other people out there just hate to listen to the one-sided announcer in Warren. If you ever been to a Warren/Massillon game in Warren you know what I am talking about!! Everything from:
TOUCHDOWN RAIDERS!!!!!!!!
to announcing the score in reverse like if Massillon is losing he will say:
Massillon 7......RAIDERS 21!!!!!!!!!!
You don't hear Walt being baised!!

not only is he biased the PA system there is very very loud, to me this just adds to the intimidating atmosphere, the announcer along with the fireworks and the loud announcer and the rowdy fans IMO makes warren one of the most intimidating places to play, even more intimidating then Fawcett

Which announcer do you despise the most:
"Shaft" from Warren
Scott Davis from Fawcett
or
FIRST DOWN ST. EDWAAAAARRRDS from St. Eds.

I wonder why this is never said about playing at PBTS, other then by teams that have never played here before. That is what home field advantage is all about, having the other team intimidated and second guessing about what they are getting into before the first snap.

Can you imagine a PA announcer actually announcing a game as if he were doing play-by-play on the radio? I had to sit through it here in AZ when I watched Hamilton play earlier this season:notlistening:

It's a great football atmosphere in Warren. You know going in that it won't be a walk in the park. The PA announcer can be annoying (at least we don't have to hear Oooooooooooomar Oooooooooooooomar) but the worst is still Scott Davis. It's not even close.

giantlugey...they aren't the only band that plays during an opposing teams running a play. Most of the paroch's bands do, as do others. We are one of the few bands that have CLASS, but whatever. That aspect doesn't affect the outcome of the game. It's more annoying than anything.
TigerVic
10-10-2006, 07:39 AM
Our band (and Walt) have class not to be annoying to the opposing teams!
The announcer really should not be part of the games beyond his informational role. I don't really recall any annoying announcers in any sport until maybe the 80s or 90s (or am I mistaken?).

When we play at Warren alot of things seem to be biased! The officiating usually is real uneven! This game could be the telling point of the season! We know that Mcdaniels is going to coach a excellant game and be well prepared-- he's one of the best around! Our team must fight through all the adversity of the crowd, announcer, and refs! We need to put together a complete game and show Warren what we really got this season!

Monte - Trust me. Warren fans have always felt the same way about playing AT Massillon. Most everything is a two-way street; it just depends on your perspective.
I think the both schools want the best officiating possible and have taken steps to ensure exactly that.

I don't think the refs are "shady" anymore at either stadium. I know the last time we played at Warren, the refs were from Stark County. Maybe in years past that wasn't the case, but nowadays, the refs are unbiased.

I think the officiating has been pretty straight up since the series was renewed. BTW, if anything many of the locals in Warren can't stand Thommy Boy. I don't look for them to him any favors.

I'm tired of hearing this whining every time you come to Warren. Frankly, if you think you get cheated over here, quit playng us.
We aint going to whine-- just open a can of whoop a@@ on you guys this week! The games have been relatively called far recently not we just want it to stay that way!!

One of the best games Massillon ever played at Mollenkopf was in '72, a 7-0 win, under coach Bob Commings.
I'd be REAL happy with that result this year... and I'm expecting another low-scoring game between Massillon & Warren.

Just a heads up:
Do to the new rules with the OHSAA "NO" band is to play when the ball is in motion. You won't here our band play when the clocks running. I am sure your director received the new rules as did ours. Some bands have been turned in for it already and believe me the penalties are harsh. :doh2:

So what you didn't say was; it is still OK for the bands to play when the clock is stopped for (ie: time-outs, out of bounds, incomplete pass, etc). I believe in those situations that the game clock (not play clock) doesn't start until the ball is snapped. So do you mean when the game clock or play clock is running. If it is game clock, then the bands can still play and distract the opponent's offensive play signals.

i don't believe that is a new rule, either. it has been that way for years, but it has never really stopped bands from continuing to play during game action.

I recall when I was in the (ahem) Jackson band in '76, we got penalized for playing while Brunswick had the ball. I don't remember the exact game situation, but it gave their drive new life and Brunswick went on to beat Jackson 7-6 (I hate that score with Brunswick for a different reason!).
I warned our director earlier in the season that a penalty could happen and it finally did.
There have been many instances in following Tiger football that it appeared the opposing band had a hand in messing up the Tigers in one way or another.
Fan noise is fine (fans on their own), but artificial noise shouldn't be there. I can't stand to watch an NBA game for that reason.

While officiating high school basketball, I have had to tell the PA announcer to "tone it down" or be removed from the table one time. The kind of things he was yelling on the sound system were unsportsmanlike and considered "baiting and taunting" by the rules. I saw only once before where an official did remove him. I'm not sure why football officials don't enforce the rule. It is there.
Becky
10-11-2006, 12:48 PM
To answer all of your questions. Yes, it is a new rule implimented this year, check it out if you would like. As a matter of fact we announce it at our games because some of our fan base were a little more than upset with the band after the first game. Some yelled at the band and asked where their spirit was because they didn't play as much as usual.
This is what I've heard: One band in NEO turned in another in NEO for playing when not aloud and the band got a warning. Then I guess a second offense is suspended from a game, third offense is a fine or suspended for the rest of the season. That is the only case of a band being turned in that I've heard. I won't mention who the bands were but they weren't D1 schools.
The bands are not suppose to play when the ball is in motion. They can play up until the snap.
I think most schools respect each other enough not to blast their bands in the faces of players when trying to call plays. Our band never played when the opposing team was on offence down at the band shell end of the field. They just scream real loud.......
I personally can't see turning in a band. It is high school football for God's sake, let the kids have fun.
TigerCoach
10-11-2006, 12:50 PM
It's also a rule in basketball. No bands during a live ball, or it's a technical foul on the team.

10-11-2006, 04:58 PM
Basketball I can understand the "no band" rule. Who cares if its football, noise is a major part of the game, plus on the field the players just tune it out anyway. TigerCoach did the band ever effect you on the field of play ?
TigerCoach
10-11-2006, 05:00 PM

The first WGH-Massillon game in 2002 is one of the loudest games that I've ever been to. It was my first WGH-Massillon game (I'm young), and I must say that I was so impressed with the intensity of Massillon's fans. WOW! You guys (Tiger fans) kept your team pumped up with all that energy. Personally, I've never seen so many people at Mollenkopf, and I've been to some packed games. I'm glad that this rivalry was brought back to life for this generation of kids.

He gets the fans up for sure. Makes them loud. Gets them cheering. Makes the game fun for them & not fun for the opposing team.
I want home field advantage. As much as I can get! .... so I would prefer his style in a minute over anyone who stays in the middle of the road.
The more people from opposing teams that say they hate him,... The more it proves my point.

Personally I'd rather have a professional sounding announcer. It's up to the team to take care of business. They shouldn't have to rely on the PA announcer to be pumped up. Does Scott Davis give McKinley a homefield advantage? Does he also do the Timken games? Even some McKinley fans have said they find him annoying. It doesn't mean he's good.

What's funny is that actual professional annoucers (Browns, ND, Penn State, Bengals, etc.) don't sound like that. You guys like it because that's the way its always been.
FYI, the Massillon fans are the only fans in the history of St. Edward football to complain about the Eagle announcer, who by the way was an announcer at Municipal Stadium for years. Reading this board for the last few years, I think some Massillon fans like to complain about everything at every game. Whether its opposing fans (and their "class"), refs, playcalling, the announcer, seating, ushers, programs, bathrooms, etc., there is always something wrong.

I know what you mean but I was refering to getting the fans motivated. I'm not sure if an announcer can get the players to play any better but a pumped up crowd sure can.
I believe the guy is a factor in the home field advantage game.

Longtimefirsttime!
I remember the 2001 Canton McKinley-Massillon game. Remember Massillon's seven-minute drive that set them up for a 29-26 win? After Ben Palumbo's pass was intercepted in the end zone (more closer to the 1) with 8:08 and the Bulldogs holding a tenuous 26-22 lead, Davis voice was quiet the rest of the way in the fourth quarter (except he did get louder on the Bulldogs last drive).
In one other instance, remember the Findlay-Tigers playoff game. Mansfield's announcer got louder when Findlay was driving down the field for a potential winning score.
Personally, I don't make anything of announcers. If they want to get a crowd into it, that's their every right. But you do not see the #1 voice of the Tigers getting high or low as he remains low key as he always does.
P.S. JazzyJeff, do you have any archives of St. Edward's announcer? I'd like to listen to him once in a while. Thanks.
