I have a question that probably can only be answered by someone older or someone with extensive Tiger Football knowledge.
My uncle from my understanding was a former head football coach as Massillon. His name is Nick Coso. I also understand that he won some state championships & a national championship. Where can I obtain information on this??? I have searched the net with no luck. Including Tiger football history. Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!!!

The book The Massillon Tigers Story The First Hundred Years list the "modern era" coaches 1932 to present. He is not listed. Would it have been earlier than 1932??

The only Nick Coso I could find on the net coached the Ferris State University Bulldogs from 1972 to 1983....His picture is on the site at this address:

I can't say for 100% but I'm almost 99.9% sure he was never a head coach for the Tigers of Massillon Washington High School, sorry.

Nick was an assistant coach under Leo Strang. He was Leo's right hand man. Massillon won three straight state championships ('59-61) and two national championships ('59,'61) while he was on the staff. I know he was well thought of as an assistant.

Thanks, I just found this info out. Leo & my uncle worked side by side at Shaw High School in Cleveland. When Leo came to Massillon, he brought my uncle with him. For all those who care, my uncle then went on to Eastern Michigan as a coordinator then to Ferris State as a head coach. Also, in the early 70s there was publication about football coaches who make it go. Bud Grant was mentioned along with my uncle.
Thanks to everyone here who helped me out. I appreciate it much!!!!!

I remember Mr. Coso from my high school years. Great coach, also taught math. He must have had his administrative certificate because I remember that two of my favorite teachers hoped that he would become principal when I.W.Snyder retired. Of course he was off to Kent with Leo Strang long before I.W. was done.
It's good to know what happened to him. I hope he had a great career at Ferris State!

Not tryin to dis Tiger accomplishments, BUT, from what I've been able to deduce, non of their championships were achieved on the field of play!!! They had an election and won by a landslid!!!

I agree. That argument gets so tired. :wall: I guess you can't count McKinley's other championships either.

I hope they never go to D-2. If they do you know some will use that as an excuse to continue their "agenda of hatred." They would criticize if Massillon recruited to keep it's numbers up. They would say "Massillon is trying to duck competition" if they fell to D-2. It's laughable but you can't win with some people. They can't "beat us" and they can't "be us" so it's their only option.

Prayers for Mr. Coso and his daughter. Was she born when he was at Kent?
I think he'll always be that young, good-looking football coach in my mind.

Nick Coso is my Uncle also. And I can remember the Massillon days, and especially Kent, EMU, and on to Ferris, where we spent many vacations. Prayers for the Coso family are so needed now. Thanks Mike for your posts.
