Ready for the news?! I received my paperwork from the Swiss Government and I am now a citizen of Switzerland! I should be receiving my passport in about 2 weeks and receive all the benefits allowed a proper Swiss Citizen. I get to keep my US passport, too, and I am allowed to vote here.

Time to celebrate! Free beer at my house tonight for all those interested!

Congrats Swissie! Does that mean you have dual citizenship, or did you have to give up your U.S. citizenship? By the way, how do the people of your country perceive American politics? Do they favor any one party over the other?

Too bad I am a freaking brunette! And isn't that basically a way to describe men from all over the world? I don't think that is exclusive to the Swiss....maybe the Swedes!

TC, I will retain my US citizenship. No way that can be taken from me unless I commit treason against the US or go into the Swiss military and I really can't see either of those happening! LOL!

Having the Swiss pass basically means that should anything happen to me, I am protected by the Swiss govt. As a permit holder, if I were to have been caught DUI, then they would have had the right to ship me out of the country. Now they can't, but I still won't do it! Should I have financial issues, I will be taken care of by my home city, Lenzburg. It would be their responsiblity to pick me up, brush me off and re-train me so that I can return to being financially self sufficient (they have some great programs over here for that).

As far as the US politics go, well, they really seem to like Obama over here. There have been so many disappointments in the currrent administration that they are ready for complete about-face. But...they are still big USA fans. And everywhere I go I get to hear stories about that "first trip to America"! Some are hilarious!

All in all, at the end of the day, I still call Massillon home. Like my step-mom says, "you can take the girl out of Massillon, but you can't take Massillon out of the girl". And me and the girls will be landing at CA/AK airport on the 27th of September! Looking forward to seeing home again!

One cannot serve two masters. Make a choice and stick with it.

IMHO, becoming a citizen of another country should automatically terminate your US citizenship.

Oh LORD. So after I move to an island after one of these two bozos get elected President I have to give up U.S. citizenship? That doesn't seem fair now, does it?

Residency and citizenship are two different things. Residency is long-term tourism; citizenship is a blood oath.

I know that I'm not the only one who read this....why the silence from our GOP friends? :tonguewave: Oh, I know....who cares what the rest of the world thinks.

Because the guys that you refer to as your GOP friends like and respect Swissie and would not wish to offend her on her celebration thread.

At the end of the day, in real life, they are gentlemen.

Are you also including in the "gentlemen" description the ones who are basically saying that having dual citizenship equates to being a traitor to America?

I must be having problems understanding, because I only saw two such comments, neither being from any of the GOP guys that you have been debating with.

I'm sorry Kamd and Swissie. Congrats to you. I think dual citizenship shows your loyalty to the land of your birth! Excellent!

No worries. I got a pretty strong umbrella for all that rain. Besides, half of me is neutral....now if I could only figure out which half!

Well, I understand the concept of picking one and sticking to it, but it honestly isn't a case of that and the US Constitution recognizes different cases and thats why it allows dual citizenship. Love does not recognize borders, as many of you know, and because of my husband's education and career, we are better off here in Switzerland, closer to his job. This does not mean that my allegiance to the US is any less than before, it just means that I can benefit from the things that my tax dollars help to fund here.

mjta, I am sorry to be missing the reunion. Unfortunately it falls at the same time as a visit we planned with family in California. But I am definitely looking forward to seeing some people when I get there!! 2 weeks in Ohio this time! Woohoo! Shall we organize a reunion after party?

And, I can tell that I must be doing a good job of raising some American Swiss girls. A friend asked my daughter Vilja the other day (in German) if she was excited about going to America. Vilja corrected her and said that she is going to the United States of America! She tells everyone that she is an American from the USA and a Swiss from Switzerland. Too cute! But I really think the most important part of coming to the US has to do with Grampa, Gramma and their stash of smiley faced cookies from Lieberman's and Kraus's pizza! See, they are also learning how to be good little Massillonians! And Vilja will be attending her first Massillon game this trip. Ah, these rights of passage! Great, ain't it?!

And TigerLily, do you know that made me laugh! I love cheese and am not prejudice as to its origin. I can guarantee you that I will be smuggling some serious amounts of cheddar and velveeta back with me! Sad, ain't I! LOL!

Thanks to all who have taken time to post on this thread. The good and the controversial. Discussion is what it is all about. I know where I stand, and I am secure in that (we now fade to Lee Greenwood singing "Proud to be an American.......!!).

From one of the guys being referenced:

We LOVE Swissie and congratulate her on her Swiss citizenship. I think it's honorable to do what you did. And no, I don't think you're now the Benedict Arnold of the Swiss Army. Oh wait they're neutral. They don't HAVE an army.

Swissie

Awe shucks! Thanks CarlE!

But wait....My hubby is a 1st Lieutenant in that army! LOL! We do indeed have an army and he has the stories to prove it. And we have an artillery base just down the road from us. Every morning when I walk to school all you hear is shooting. Feel like I am in a freaking war zone. Told my nephew in Iraq that I was walking the kids to school last week and counted 10 tanks that passed by us on the road. He just thinks thats a hoot considering we are in Switzerland. The best part is to see the guys on bicycles with their guns slung on their backs (much like I would with my purse!) in the evening on their way to target practice. My parents love to sit outside on Saturday mornings when they are here visiting and listen to the bombs going off. It is really a hilarious place sometimes!

When I asked a friend of my husband's why Swissieland has an army if they are neutral, he said "to preserve our neutrality". Okay, I can buy that.

Have you ever seen this:
